I'm OK at chess, but dont play very often. I'm also quite fond of Go, but hardly ever play that, and am pretty bad as a result...

"Tiddles!" bellowed Moist. He wished he hadn't. It was such a stupid name to shout in a burning building.

An explosion of soup made the bumblebee fly, so I'm told.

I suck at chess and checkers, but I'm a fair hand at 1830* and Brittania. My friends and I also like Republic of Rome, and Magic Realm, and Titan. THose knid of board games, where strategy and tactics are more important than luck, appeal more to us than the more die-dominated types of games.

*and 1829, 1835 and the other 1830 variants.

Has anyone ever played the old Dr Who boardgame? One of my friends had a set years ago, and I absolutely loved it, but I never tracked down my own set, and now I havent played it for ages...

Okay, guys. Now comes out from under the mysterious Yule tree the game of Khet, played on a board with mirrors and lasers which as a mother I must remind my young repeatedly NOT to put their head down right next the the board and try to see what a laser beam looks like as it's emitting from the diode...

Oh. Sorry. Only myself to blame, I did buy it. Apparently it used to be called Deflexion. The goal is to move your mirrors around to direct the laser beam to hit your opponent's pharoah piece.

So far only one game has been played on it. (This is the same silly family that managed one game apiece of Thud when it came out from under the Yule tree last year. What is the matter with these people?)

Does anyone have any experience with this? I have been studying the board, but since no one will condescend to actually move any of the pieces, I can't really tell if it is deep or shallow.

Heh. And they always blame fathers for buying stuff for kids they actually want for themselves... Wink

But anyway, board games. I used to have lots of fun with Scotland Yard, where one player is the criminal at large playing against the other players as a team of coppers on a map of London, until I found out by experience that it is in fact extremely biased. Although at first glance it seems that the criminal has lots of opportunities and resources, experience showed that in 90% of the games he got caught.
But still, great fun! The visor to shield your eyes from other players, so they can't see what part of the map you're looking at, was an unexpected bonus (and probably the reason I was criminal in 90% of the games played[ *] because no one else wanted to wear it Very Happy ).

[ *] only kidding, but it was a lot.

Happy Thudding!

I found a new game that can actually be played with the thud-board and pieces. It is called Siam. You can download the rules here:
http://ferti.free.fr/games/siam/siam-rules.zip
I didn't have the chance to play yet, but it does sound intriguing.

Re: Khet

A while ago i bumbed into this game, "hive" . It is a small and quick game played with hexagonal pieces and without a board. I found it fun to play, you can try it here as a flash game.

EDIT:

Just had a look at the rules of SIAM, looks interesting indeed Smile
Funny thing is, i made a game wich was very similar to this a couple of years back XD . It had slightly different pushing rules, a bigger board and more pieces. The goal was to push your oppponents pieces off the board though, instead the rocks.

Hey Floris, nice to see you back as well.

I just had a quick look at the rule set for hive. It looks quite difficult. I think I need some more time to study the rules in detail.

Are you still designing new games? If so, do you need a play tester? Wink

Re: Khet

Don't get sucked into the belief bog standard Monopoly, cluedo, chess, ludo and draughts (checkers to some) are the only board games.......
We class board games into two categories - the 'oh sh*t' and the 'you B' and there are some lovely games in either and both categories - some are simple like the Great Balloon Race and Elephant Parade - both deceptively simple games but when you get to know them there is a lot more to them than you first thought!
Then there are more complicated and longer games like Circus Maximus and The Really Nasty Horserace Game.
and a card game called Family Business - don't be misled - the families in this case are 'Underworld' Families. You need the max 6 players to get the most out of this game. Each player runs a Family - you take contracts out on each other, there are police raids, arms amnesties etc - a wee dram or two can add to the enjoyment.
But if you want a 'gentle' game try Seaside Frolics!
And for something totally daft - Antics

Oh yes - another deceptively simple game we played (under the influence) at the Dead Monkey Party after DWCon 2010 was Cheeky Monkey - this game transcended nationalities - including Dutch, Spanish, Irish, English, American, and Anglo-Indian enjoying the game!
